Big Art

This Lublin agency has been shooting films, commercials and television programmes since 1993, and it also runs its own channels and shops. All of it was scattered around the web, so from the outside nobody could see the scale.

My role

I ran the project on my own, from the first conversation to launch day.

The design

The screen layouts, the typography, the colours and the way you move around the site were made for this one company, with no ready template and no site builder. I set the direction to match what the client wanted, and every screen went to him for approval before I started coding it.

The code

Seven pages, the rotating carousel of work on the first screen, the scrolling galleries of covers and products, the animations and the transitions between sections. All written by hand and tested on a computer, a tablet and a phone.

Video without leaving the site

Films from YouTube play in a small window that stays on screen while you keep scrolling. The viewer is not sent off to another service they usually do not come back from.

Form and consents

A contact form with an attachment of up to eight megabytes, the cookie consent and the privacy policy page.

SEO basics

Titles and search descriptions, tidy headings and image descriptions on every page.

Launch

The certificate on the client hosting, uploading the files and connecting the domain. The server was on the client side, the rest was on mine.

The words on the site belong to the client, because he knows his productions best. The line on the first screen, from frame to broadcast, is mine.

The client talked to one person the whole time and had one person answerable for the result. Nothing got lost between the designer, the developer and the administrator.

The first screen. One sentence about the company and straight on to the work
01 THE BRIEF What the client came with

What needed solving

Big Art does several things at once and each of them had its own place online. A visitor would land on one piece and have no idea the rest existed.

Second thing: a film frame needs a dark background and room to breathe, not a white sheet with a list of services. The site had to get out of the image the way.

02 DECISIONS Three things that set up everything else
None of these ideas went in without asking. We agreed the direction with the client before I built anything, and the final word was his. I do my best to make the site hold up for an outsider too, but first it has to match what the client expects.
01

A dark background as the stage

The whole site is black so the frames do the glowing. Colour appears only where something is happening.

02

One sentence instead of a service list

The first screen says one thing: from frame to broadcast. The service list sits beside it, in smaller type, and stays out of the way.

03

Work laid out on a film strip

The projects sit on a film strip you turn with the mouse or drag with a finger. Instead of a grid of thumbnails you see straight away what this company does.

03 THE RESULT How it turned out

Where it stands today

The site is live at big-art.com.pl. The agency now has one place that shows the full range of what it does: commercials for brands and institutions, its own YouTube channels, a video platform, a publishing arm and two shops.

Each of those areas got a page of its own with its own address. A visitor lands straight on what they came for, and search engines have something to index.
